30 Whole Days: Adventures in Whole30 Land

"Do you not know your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own, you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body" -1 Corinthians 6:19-20

No, Im not writing this blog to preach; but, I am writing to tell you just why I did this Whole30 challenge and what I got out of it. In order to do that, we gotta get a little Jesus on. 

Little background on Lisa: Welp, my sisters and I have been overweight our whole lives...we were never fed any differently than "normal" kids but when you combine "normalcy" with genetically slow metabolisms, you get a lifetime of having to counteract that. Only since I graduated college in May 2010, have I realized that counteraction can become a passion to be carried out the rest of my life. I started with a personal trainer in San Antonio and he helped shape me into a girl passionate about a good workout and a good chicken breast...and she shed about 85 pounds.  He showed me the way to Crossfit when I moved up in September and Im happy to say the box has continued to fuel my passion for a better me along with my passion to please the Lord with my body.

I hit a plateau in my weightloss and this challenge could not have come at a better time. I saw the post about it and said "Ill think about it" then I looked at my fridge where I have 1 Corinthians 6:19 written and said "umm just do it". After accepting the fact that I talk to myself, I instantly entered the mindset of fighting to "honor HIM" with my body. I am NOT my own and I see no better reason to support the idea of cutting mans hands out of what I put INTO my body than that. 

While I was already living out about a 70/30 version of this, going 100% was the best decision I could ever make. 

The first week was easy...its like the honeymoon phase. I was doing something new, challenging, competitive and wanted everyone and their dog to know. I had an office of onlooking supporters, family and friends rooting me on across Texas and a box FAM-UH-LEE right along side me. I noticed the bit of fatigue but only the first 10 days and then I felt like I could do this forever. Challenges arose when we had event after event for work that included cocktail hours and catered lunches and snacks everywhere. My bags of Jicama sticks and homemade trail mixes quickly became a crutch so I always felt like I was getting a treat too. I was so thankful for Coach Becca in her advice and pointers, on this especially. 

Another challenge was TIME. Oh because, like MOST of you, I only get 24 hours in a day and for some reason there are only 7 of them in a week. (still challenging God on this decision) If you can relate, you know time really does seem to "fleet" sometimes. I worked my regular designer job Monday through Friday and then spent every weekend of January traveling to Waco where I was painting set backdrops two days straight, only to drive back on Sundays and start it all over again. Friday nights were spent cooking and prepping and bagging my food for the weekend so there was no chance of a slip up. And it worked. I traveled with my kit of food and ice pack each and every weekend and was excited to break for my bags of joyfully prepped meals.

Things I never knew were so satisfying to a need for sweet:
Apples
Bananas
Jicama

Things I missed:
My weekly non-fat chai latte
Hummus
Wine
(all of which I can now see how to integrate reasonably if I really want to)

Things I discovered: 
Preparation is EVERYTHING
You MUST prepare
Oh and PREP, PREP, PREP.

After 30 days, Ive lost about 11 pounds, fit into smaller dress pants (among other noticeable clothing changes) and have increased my intensity in my WODs. I cut my "the cheese" WOD down by 3 minutes but also went from air squats to 75lb front squats and increased my runs for the WOD from 200s to 250s. Ive gained deeper squats and a gradual increase in my running endurance. My boss and co-workers come to me for weekly recipes, grocery tips and say I am plain inspiring. I even have a group of us training for our first 5k!

I can feel my body telling me "this is IT...THIS is what we need". And I plan to continue to listen to that to understand "I am not my own" and to feed this passion to make a lifelong LIFESTYLE out of this. I will realistically go to a 90/10 but have built in accountability everywhere. That does NOT exclude you people. I have loved talking food with so many of my fellow participants and CRAVE that common passion and the accountability of continually answering to "hows the nutrition?". So yes...thats on you. Keep it up. Please!!!

In 3 John 1, we are told "good health goes well with our soul". What can be more comforting than that? Even Jesus says healthy looks good on us. Come on. Give it a try. I dare ya.

    I love your blog little one!  You are so, sooo precious! Have you met my son Paul, we do the 5:30am class Mon, Tue, Thur & Fri.  Just saying and not really trying anything at all.
