Change Your Mind

Change Your Mind!

By Pa’Shun Durand

After joining CrossFit a year ago I was taught the two keys to weight loss and healthy living, exercise and nutrition. Now grant it I have always known that this was the only path getting to the thinner, healthier me, I just hadn’t gotten tire of looking like a chubbier version of Vivica Fox. Last year I decided to say good bye to chubby Vivica and say hello to Pa’Shun the Fox.  I’m happy to report intense exercise and clean eating took me from 197 lbs. to my goal weight of 155 lbs.!

Being in the Whole30 challenge has helped me to discover that there are actually three keys to a successful life changing fitness program and that key is changing your mind. I had to change the way I thought about food. The Whole9 nutrition plan is not about what I can’t eat but what I should be eating. I did a lot of research to prepare for the challenged and I was blown away at what I found! I’m surprised I’m not totting around a nasty back tumor with all the cancer causing dyes and additives in food and don’t even get me started on genetically modified foods. Here’s one for all us sugar substitute partakers although the alternative sweeteners can be up to five times sweeter then natural sugar they have been found to trigger cravings as well as cause inflammation in the body. The good news is vitamin D found in sunlight has been found to be a natural way to reduce food cravings. Another fun tidbit that I learned is that cinnamon is a natural aphrodisiac for men, so ladies break out those cinnamon rich recipes.

My biggest weight gaining contributor is wine. I drank most of my calories. I would have two huge glasses of wine before bed every night and even more on the weekends. While doing my Whole30 research I found out those women who drink everyday have smaller brains then women who don’t. Now I want my butt to be smaller not my brain so I have reduced my libation consumption to a small amount on special occasions.

Even though the challenge is over I have stuck with the Whole9 nutrition plan because some of the benefit have been my WOD rankings have improved, I know I’m physically stronger and I can see I’m gaining some muscle tone. The best benefit of eating clean is without all the toxins floating around in my body I have tons more energy and my brain seems to be function has improved and I need all the help I can get in that area.

My youngest daughter said something to me in the middle of the challenge that aided me to persevere through, in her most serious voice she said “Mommy you’re my  hero because you’re working really hard to make yourself pretty on the inside and on the outside… Just like a Capuchin monkey.” (Yeah I have no idea what that last part means so dont even ask). CrossFit has helped to change the way I think about exercise and the Whole9 has helped me to change the way I think about food and they both have helped me to change my life. I have also realized that pregnant women should not stand in front of the microwave; it may cause some of the kids to come out a little strange.

    Hey Girl,
You don't just want to help with ONE of my kids, but ALL THREE RIGHT!!!?
No, I'm not sick.  I got hurt because of a bad fall in the ice.  I tested things out in MMA lastnight though, and I think I will be able to get back to Crossfit.  You won't see me in the noon class for awhile though.  I am on a legal project and need to go before or after work.  You should go to the social!  I want to see the results of Whole30.  I'm sure you look great!
