Future CFS Athlete in Training
Something I love about CrossFit Strong is that everyone is considered an athlete when they walk in the door. From the first day, I felt empowered by that simple label. For me, it was a vote of confidence in what I WOULD do before I had even shown what I COULD do. And the amazing thing is, what I COULD do changed as a result. The mental preparation started before the physical work began, and I began Crossfitting with the mindset of an athlete.
Was I intimidated when I walked in the box that first week? Definitely! I looked around and saw physical fitness oozing out of everyone around me – and of course Choq and Cat were there gearing up for competition and totally astounding me in the process. But I had been called an athlete, and I wanted to live up to that title! So I dug in, listened hard, absorbed information, and started working. And guess what, I’m still intimidated when I walk into the box! But now it is because of the WOD, not the people, and I look that WOD in the face (on its two-dimensional projection against the wall) and decide to conquer it – no backing down. And I like to think that WOD trembles just a bit in response.
However, the best thing about our box for me is the people. The people are what make CrossFit Strong my box, rather than just a place to work out. A “good job” as we cross paths on yet another 400 meter run between grueling weight lifting segments is like an energy boost for my workout, and I find myself pushing just a bit harder after that, digging down for whatever is left. The coaches yelling encouragement even as they push us to get another round in during an AMRAP suddenly finds me powering through a last round I didn’t know I had in me. Letting the coaches know I’m going to be a CrossFit Mom for the first time and having them share in my excitement and look forward to helping me CrossFit through this new experience – that’s what makes this more than your typical gym.
So as my future CFS athlete develops I can start their mental preparation, and maybe even some physical training too (there’s room in there for burpees, and I want those feet to clear the cord!) And someday, my little mini-crossfitter can walk through the doors and be called an athlete too.
